Sending me your Blogger template

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

note/clarification: I’m happy to help you with your template, but you MUST submit a help desk ticket so I know who’s who and what we’re working on. thanks!

These are the instructions for sending me your blogger template so I can just point people here and not have to look it up each time. If I do ask you to send me your Blogger template, please follow these steps and mail the XML file to mister (dot) linky (at) gmail (dot) com — I’m assuming you can figure out how to turn that into an e-mail address. If you have a gold or platinum membership and are trying to install ever-linky or comment-linky code in your template, I am very happy to do that for you. Just make sure you submit a help desk ticket and let me know you’re sending it, because messages sometimes get lost in e-mail. The helpdesk is monitored automatically to prevent anything from falling through the cracks.

Anyway, to get your Blogger template, here’s what you do: go to your Blogger Dashboard, to the Layout settings and click on Edit HTML, you should see a link “Download Full Template” — click on that and a .XML file will be downloaded to your computer. send that file to me as an attachment and I’ll do what I can as quickly as possible.

another note: in your e-mail, if you wouldn’t mind reminding me of your mister linky user id and which type of widget (ever-linky, comment-linky, auto-linky, etc.) you want, that helps a great deal.

After I’ve made the changes, I’ll send you back the .XML file and you’ll apply it to your blog right there on that same page where you downloaded it from. Where it says “Upload a template from a file on your hard drive” you’ll click the “Browse” button, find the file I sent you, and click “Upload” — and then you should be all set!

Comment-Linky Plugin for WordPress

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

To use the new Comment-Linky Plugin for WordPress…

0. **note** if you are currently using the original Mister Linky auto-linky plugin, you’ll want to disable that before you do anything, and you could even delete it, since the new one does everything the old one did plus the new stuff. thanks, Dawn!

1. download the plugin zip file here.

2. unzip and you’ll get a file called blenza.php — upload this to your /wp-content/plugins directory.

3. go to your /wp-admin/plugins.php page, look for “Mister Linky’s Magical Widgets”, and activate it.

4. click the “Mister Linky Setup” link at the top of the plugins page.

5. enter your Mister Linky User ID in the form and click the Enter button. NOTE: You must re-do the User ID step if you already had the plugin before the new server was added.

6. whenever you write a new post, scroll down to where it says “Post Meme” and select the meme (if any) you want to use.

7. once you’ve published your post, your visitors will see a new “participant” checkbox when they leave you a comment. if they check it, their link will appear in the linky list at the bottom of your post.

that’s all there is to it!

please be aware of a few things:

1. the red x’s you might have seen in the past next to people’s links — only you, as administrator of your blog, can see those — they’re a handy way to delete someone who doesn’t belong, but what are the chances of that, if they’ve left a comment? :)

2. there is some unfinished code lurking — not in the plugin itself, but if you link out of the generated code. if you delete a link, for example, you might notice “/linkies2/” in the url — this is a temporary thing and if you do hit any errors, let me know about them and I’ll fix them right up.

3. once this thing is ready for general availability, I’ll need you to re-download, so that you’ll be pointing to the main site and not to the “/linkies2/” area — the dangerously sharp, bleeding edge of linky-land.

4. thank you very, very much for your help! :)

Testing, 1-2-3! If you’d be so kind as to play along here, I’m testing a new feature. What’s about? Well since it happens to be thursday, let’s see if I can come up with thirteen things about the new feature…

1. It's the Comment-Linky Plugin for WordPress.
2. Just like the regular comment-linky, visitors have to leave a comment if they want to add their link.
3. But it's javascript free!
4. That means it's Technorati-friendly!
5. And it's Google-friendly, too!
6. I've just finished the code and I'm testing it out before anybody else uses it.
7. Uggh, have I ever mentioned how much I hate it when web sites use the "accesskey" attribute in their HTML?
8. The Comment-Linky Plugin is super easy to use.
9. First you have to install it, edit it (to set your user id), activate it.
10. Then when you write a post, you select the meme -- yes, right there in the post editor!
11. When you publish your post, you're done!
12. And no, you don't have to use the bracket syntax like the Auto-Linky Plugin has.
13. Because it's less resource-intense, it will be a Gold feature rather than Platinum.

Whew, wasn’t sure I was going to make it through the list! Please feel free to leave a comment, and if you’re participating in TT today, go ahead and click the Participant button to add your link!
